The exhibition "Black is Beautiful: Kwame Brathwaite" at the Centre d'Art GwinZegal showcases the groundbreaking work of the Afro-American photographer who played a pivotal role in redefining the aesthetic narratives of Black culture during the 1960s. Featuring iconic images of the Grandassa Models and moments from the vibrant Harlem scene, Brathwaite’s photography not only celebrates Black beauty but also serves as a powerful testament to cultural pride and political activism. This retrospective marks the first comprehensive display of Brathwaite's work in Europe, highlighting his collaborations with influential musicians and his contributions to movements that championed Black autonomy and identity. The exhibition, curated by François Cheval, Yasmine Chemali, and Jérôme Sother, runs from February 13 to June 7, 2026.
